Thimbleless Floor Conversions saves EAF Steel Mill During the last ten years, Midwesco Filter has successfully retrofitted eight EAF Steel Mill baghouses with “thimble-less” floors. Midwesco Filter was the first company to demonstrate this innovation which many competitors have copied, including the Original Equipment Builders. Imitation is truly the sincerest form of flattery. From the onset of increased production rates and shorter tap-to-tap times, EAF Melt Shops and Baghouses have suffered. As Melt Shops began the practice of adding peak shaving and water sprays and the inevitable leaks that occurred, the moisture levels in these baghouses increased and trouble quickly ensued. Filter bags began to suffer from increased drag resistance and shorter life due to rat-holed thimbles and hoppers. The rat holing was a direct result of increased moisture levels in the flue gas stream. Increased linear gas velocities within the filter bags literally shredded the filter media and increased visible emissions. No filter bag was spared. The solution promoted by Midwesco Filter was first demonstrated on a small scale at a Southeastern Mini-Mill known for their own brand innovation and field research. Once deemed successful, the Mini-Mill contracted Midwesco Filter to renovate and retrofit their baghouse in its entirety, nearly 7000 bags. Although the Midwesco “way” has been copied, it has not been ever duplicated, not even close. From the first job to the most recent job, in the Summer of 2003, Midwesco Filter has successfully and diligently executed each contract; on time, within budget, with no accidents or blunders.
